Salvaged Timber, Milled Into Slabs & Custom Furniture

Live-edge slabs, benches and custom furniture, milled from timber salvaged in local tree removals, not forestry.

Not Every Tree Needs to End Up as Mulch

Where the timber is suitable, we mill it into slabs, benches, tabletops and other custom pieces, timber with real character, salvaged from local backyards rather than sent straight to mulch. It's a practical way to keep good wood out of the waste stream, and give a tree a second life instead of a woodchip pile.

A Closer Look at What We Mill

Tables

Dining tables, hallway tables and console pieces built from a single milled slab. We work with the natural shape and grain of the timber rather than cutting it back to a uniform rectangle, so no two tables come out the same. Suitable for indoor use once sealed and finished.

Benchtops

Kitchen, bathroom and bar benchtops milled to your required dimensions. Because each benchtop comes from a single salvaged log, the grain and colour run continuously across the piece, something you don't get from engineered or laminated stock.

Log Benches & Seating

Solid outdoor seating cut directly from sections of log, left closer to their natural form. Suited to gardens, entryways, decks and landscaped areas where a more rustic, weather-hardy piece makes sense.

Shelving & Mantles

Full-character shelves and mantelpieces milled to a size and thickness that suits the space they're going into, including fireplace mantles cut from a single continuous piece rather than joined sections.

Custom Furniture

If you've got a specific piece in mind, a coffee table, a hallway table, a feature shelf, bring us the brief and we'll tell you what's realistic given the timber we have available at the time.

Steel Table Frames

For a more industrial or contemporary look, we can build a custom steel frame or base to pair with a milled slab, rather than a timber leg or trestle. Frames are built to suit the size and style of the piece.

Salvaged, Not Forested

This timber isn't sourced from forestry operations. It comes from trees already being removed from local backyards and properties across the Dandenong Ranges and Eastern Melbourne. Milling it keeps good timber out of the waste stream and gives it a second life, rather than letting it go to landfill or the mulcher.

Because the timber comes from established residential and semi-rural properties rather than plantation stock, species and colour vary from job to job, and that's part of what gives each slab its own character. Where possible, we favour native species already growing in the area, so nothing new is felled specifically for milling.

We mill and supply salvaged timber across the Dandenong Ranges and Melbourne's eastern suburbs, including Belgrave, Emerald, Ferntree Gully, Upwey, Monbulk and surrounding areas.

  • Sourced from local tree removals, not forestry
  • Native and locally grown species
  • Ethically and sustainably sourced
  • Seasoned, unseasoned or kiln-dried stock available
  • Reduces waste from tree removal work
  • Every slab is unique to the tree it came from

Our Workshop in Emerald

Tree Range Arborists is based in Emerald, in the foothills of the Dandenong Ranges. Our workshop holds a range of pre-milled timber on hand, ready to view and purchase directly rather than waiting on a custom order.

Emerald sits among some of the oldest and tallest native forest in the region, surrounded by the kind of mature gardens and established properties our salvaged timber typically comes from.

While we're based in Emerald, we mill and supply salvaged timber right across Melbourne, not only the Dandenong Ranges and eastern suburbs.

The Dandenong Ranges and Melbourne's eastern suburbs produce some genuinely beautiful timber, mature eucalypts, old hardwoods and native species that have often stood on a property for decades before coming down. Species we commonly have on hand include Mountain Ash, Blackwood, Manna Gum, Messmate and River Red Gum, though exact stock varies depending on what's come through recently.

All the milling and salvage work on this page is done directly through Tree Range Arborists. We're also behind Dark Horse Timber Co, a sister business specialising in reclaimed and custom timber, if you'd like to see more of what's possible.

Common Questions About Salvaged Timber

Can I keep timber from my own tree removal?

In many cases, yes. If the log is a suitable size and species, we can mill it into slabs, benches or furniture instead of sending it for mulching. This is worth raising when you book a quote, since suitability depends on the specific tree, its condition and how much of it can be safely retained during removal.

What species of timber do you work with?

Mostly native and locally grown species from the trees we remove, including timber like Mountain Ash, Blackwood, Manna Gum, Messmate and River Red Gum. What's available changes job to job, since we're milling from real removals rather than a fixed plantation supply.

How long does milling take?

It depends on the size of the log and whether the timber needs to season or dry before use. Fresh-milled ("green") timber is available sooner, while seasoned or kiln-dried stock takes longer to prepare but is more stable and better suited to furniture use.

Do you deliver, or do I need to collect?

Both are possible depending on the size and location of the piece. Some customers collect directly from our Emerald workshop, others need larger or heavier pieces delivered. Get in touch with details of what you're after and we'll let you know what's practical.

What condition does the timber need to be in?

We assess suitability based on species, diameter and how the tree came down. Timber affected by significant rot, disease or embedded metal typically isn't suitable for milling, though smaller sections can sometimes still be used for a smaller piece.

How much does milling or a custom piece cost?

Cost depends on the size of the log, the amount of work involved and the type of piece you're after. Get in touch with what you have in mind, including rough dimensions if you have them, and we'll give you a straightforward quote.

Can I buy pre-milled timber without a custom order?

Yes. Our Emerald workshop keeps a range of pre-milled slabs and sections on hand that you can view and purchase directly, without waiting on a custom milling job.
